Custom illustrations are a colorful workaround to scarce photography.
Arts Central engaged me to design a fold-out Cultural Roadmap for Central Oregon to promote cultural tourism. Because photography was scarce and inconsistent for many of the map’s features, we decided a cohesive set of illustrations would be a better approach, and also speak to the spirit of the map.
The map front features cultural landmarks and events in Central Oregon. For each feature on the map, I created a graphic by carving an image in linoleum, hand-inking and printing it on paper, then scanning and converting the image to a vectored illustration.
I then designed the map front and back and helped edit submissions to fit within space constraints.
Several other entities were involved in this project: The Redmond Chamber of Commerce, The Jefferson County Cultural Coalition, Crook County Cultural Coalition, Deschutes National Forest Scenic Byways, and The Museum at Warm Springs.
Cultural entities through the region received copies of the map for display and distribution.
